Eye strain, headaches, and near blur, OH MY! We now live in a digital world. From the time we wake up until we close our eyes, everywhere we look some form of digital device can be seen. Most of us, including children, spend multiple hours per day engrossed in the digital world. What is computer vision syndrome (CVS) and how can we help keep our eyes safe?

  1. Get a comprehensive eye examination! Even a minor prescription can make a huge difference. Be sure to mention how often you are on a computer and how far you sit from the computer. Focusing and binocularity (the ability for your two eyes to work together) can also be the culprit and can only be examined by an eye doctor.
  2. Take frequent breaks. Consider the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break and look 20 feet away.
  3. Don’t forget about blinking! When we focus on something, such as the computer, we tend to blink less. This can make our eyes very dry and cause blur. This should also be mentioned to your eye care professional to discover the best solution for you.
  4. Mind your posture. Adjust your workstation so that you are higher than your computer. Set your computer so that it is approximately 15degrees below eye level and 20-24inches from you. This will be the most ergonomic position for your head, neck and eyes!
